How far can a paper airplane fly?

Step 2 — What the machine said
We asked an AI assistant. Here is what it said, word for word:
“A well-folded paper airplane typically flies somewhere between 10 and 20 metres when thrown by an experienced thrower. Distance depends mainly on the fold design, throwing technique, and air conditions. Competition throwers achieve considerably more.”
Read it again. Two questions before you go anywhere near a tape measure:

Step 3 — Go and find out
You need: one sheet of paper, a tape measure or a piece of string, and a hallway or a garden.

Fold a plane. Any fold you like.

Mark where you stand. Same spot every time.

Throw it three times. Measure each one. Write down all three.

Write down the longest.
This is the number to put next to the other two.

Pick one and say why. Then you can see what happens.
For the parent — Why this one — the most important note in the week
Notice what the machine did not do: it did not get anything wrong. Ten to twenty metres is a reasonable number. Every word of that paragraph is defensible.
What it did was quietly answer a different question from the one asked — and then say it with total confidence, without ever mentioning which version of the question it had picked. Your child asked about a paper airplane. It answered about an expert’s paper airplane, in a sports hall, on their best throw.
That is the shape your child will meet for the rest of their life. Not obvious errors — those are easy. Confident, well-written answers to a question nobody actually asked. It happens in product reviews, in news, in advice from people who mean well, and in every AI assistant they will ever use.
The defence is not suspicion. A child who learns to expect machines to be wrong is no better off than one who trusts them — both have stopped thinking. The defence is the habit of asking what question this is answering, and going to find out. That is why this one ends with a tape measure and not with an opinion.
If your child says the machine was wrong: do not correct them. Ask what it would have needed to know in order to answer their question. They get there on their own, and it lands harder when they do.
Parent script
Step 1. Read this out:
“How far do you think a paper airplane can fly? Give me a number, in metres.”
Wait. If they ask “what kind of plane?” — that is the whole lesson arriving early. Say: “Good question. Hold on to it.” Do not answer it.
Step 2. Let them read what the AI said. Then:
“Whose throw do you think that is?”
Ten seconds of quiet. This is the moment. Do not fill it.
Step 3. Take them somewhere with room. Your job here is to hold the tape measure and to say nothing about the fold. If it nose-dives, it nose-dives.
Step 4. Read this out:
“So — was the machine wrong?”
Whatever they say, follow with:
“What question do you think it was answering?”
If they say it was wrong: don’t correct them. Ask “What would it have needed to know, to answer your question?” They will get there.
